Before I dive into the interesting stuff about me (at least I hope you’ll find it interesting), let’s get the formal stuff out of the way. I’m from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and currently reside there. I talk like the coach from The Waterboy and have webbed feet. I shoot alligators from my back porch and have a plethora of snake skins hanging on the walls of my cabin in the swamp. I’ve also met Victory Crowly and can confirm that the legends are true. I also hope you can tell I’m being sarcastic.
In all honesty, I’m married with four kids, so life is a circus and those are my monkeys. When I’m not working, writing, or doting on my family, I like to train martial arts.
I can speak fluent sarcasm, and really don’t care for cat videos. I am a huge fan of wrestling promo videos from the 80s though.
Now, on to the deep questions of life. How did I get into writing horror? A steady diet of horror movies since I was a kid, Stephen King books in high school, three theology degrees, and twenty plus years in the ministry.
What? Ministry? Yes, having been a pastor, you get to see a lot. You get to see the good, the bad, and the ugly. You see some people crumble and let evil win, while others hold out and fight against it and overcome. You see massive fall outs and gut-wrenching heartache. You also see awe-inspiring forgiveness and love that endures all. You see the pain and suffering of death up close and personal. You see grief, you see desperation. You see hope, you see joy. You see the entire gamut of human emotion and existence. Given my experiences, and the scriptures emphasis on good versus evil, sin, redemption, and the supernatural, the crossover to horror was easy. I made the leap and started writing horror fiction in April 2017.
What kind of horror do I write? All kinds. The greatest compliment people have given me about my writing is that “your stories are all so different, it’s hard to believe they come from the same author.” I’ll take that! However, if you were to pin me down and make me confess as to what type of horror is my favorite to write, I’d have to say horror comedy. That’s why you should check out my forthcoming horror comedy with Stitched Smile Publications called The Adventures of Johnny Walker Ranger: Demon Slayer.
More fun facts:
I have a bull terrier named Ash, who I can’t stop dragging her butt across my rug. Not really. Her real name is Tinkerbell, and she’s a Papillion (Shut up, my daughter named it when she was just five).
I like peanut butter, a lot. I eat it every day (although now that I’ve had my first bout with kidney stones, doc is telling me to lay off).
I enjoy horror movies and my favorite actor is Bruce Campbell (and has been since I was fourteen).
I like studying philosophy, theology, and science.
I like being a father and a husband to a pretty cool family.
I speak a lot in sarcasm, and like watching people get in awkward social situations.
If you want to know anything else about me, just ask, and I’ll answer, as long as it’s not a stupid question.
